Warning

Commissioner:Handehog
Reason: I suppose I'm partly to blame in that he seemed very nice and easy to work with. I shouldn't have kept drawing for him after I finished the WIP and there was no payment. I finished shading in the image and he asked for more detail. I went ahead and added extra detail and did the edits requested. I'm not going to lie and say I didn't get irritated with him. Here's the full disclosure after I sent him the reworked image:

Update (the rest of the conversation where he says he's going to pay but...):

Approved, but could you please give us a little more information, such as screen-caps of the initial commission chats/notes and notes relating to when you presented the WIP?

[identity profile] kerstin-orion.livejournal.com 2011-07-03 07:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Oops, it looks like your edits did something odd...I can't see any images now.

This is one of the reasons I both take payment upfront and don't price myself so cheap. You get rude, overly entitled customers like these who feel they deserve far more work than they paid for, or didn't pay for, in this case. It kind of sounds like he just wanted free art, to me.

You might want to consider adding a link to the finished image and a screencap of where he originally agreed to pay after a WIP.

[identity profile] carms-lady.livejournal.com 2011-07-03 06:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Ouch. One of my customers wasn't too happy with the end result, but I got to keep the down payment. Always get a down payment first, then sketch, show, if customer approves, you get the final payment, and he gets his picture. Too many phonies out there, as well as people who have no idea what goes into a piece of work. I tend to turn down requests that want me to paint something that's not in my comfort zone :/

[identity profile] megumi-kitten.livejournal.com 2011-07-03 09:24 pm (UTC)(link)
This. I am worried when I open commisions someone will ask me for something I CLEARLY don't draw, and I didn't know if it's ok to just tell them that.

Thanks, this actually helped me! (even if I'm not the OP)

Admittedly, how the guy talked to the artist and refused to pay him anything is enough of a beware for me to avoid the guy, though more info is always nice!

This behavior has me disgusted and furious. ( I also had a look at this fellow's page, and he doesn't seem to like life or anything in it. ) He's on my block list on both accounts as of now. What nasty behavior!

How rude to say something like " Oh, I thought your gallery was just full of your sub-par art and you were saving the good stuff for commissioners." He owes you money for your time.

You are a great artist to commission. Maybe consider having people pay half or full if the price is over a certain amount? If they pay all of it up front, you just have to make sure not to spend the money until the art is done- just in case they want a refund or something doesn't work out.

I am so sorry this happened to you.

[identity profile] mrst4nkr.livejournal.com 2011-07-03 06:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Also- WATERMARK THE SNOT OUT OF UNPAID ARTWORK.

Seriously. If the commissioner hasn't paid a dime for something, and you still want to be trusting, it better have the most obnoxious watermark in the universe in it.

Wow. WOW.

I hope everyone in the world sees this. What a stinker. I'd really, really like the artistic community to be hip enough to this guy's shenanigans to snap him out of this "I pay for it if I like it" BS.

[identity profile] kriscynical.livejournal.com 2011-07-04 09:30 am (UTC)(link)
It's absurd to apply that to a plethora of other services out there so I always marvel at how some people think that kind of behavior is okay just because it's an artist. I can't refuse to pay my CPA if I don't like the amount of write-offs he found in my records. He still did my taxes, so I have to pay him!

[identity profile] jinoki.livejournal.com 2011-07-03 06:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh wow. This guy's both rude and entitled. I'm sorry you had to deal with him. That's unfortunate.

[identity profile] hamburger.livejournal.com 2011-07-03 06:39 pm (UTC)(link)
There are not enough 'Wows' in the world -- comparing someone's work to shitting? And paying someone for work being 'charity'? What?

I certainly hope this beware gets around.

[identity profile] hellebore.livejournal.com 2011-07-03 06:44 pm (UTC)(link)
That is one very bitter, angry man. Yeeowsh, thanks for this. You'll probably get stiffed on that money, but I don't think dealing with him is worth the $17, as it's apparent he's stuck on his ways.

[identity profile] ladysnakebite.livejournal.com 2011-07-03 06:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Ummmmm wow. :|

[identity profile] ladysnakebite.livejournal.com 2011-07-03 06:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Err to make that less of an empty comment-- I can't BELIEVE how rude that commissioner was. This is exactly why I take payment upfront always.

I *am* curious to see the pictures involved, but even so, the commissioner's attitude is just... appalling.

[identity profile] kairi-koitra.livejournal.com 2011-07-03 07:00 pm (UTC)(link)
You know since there is another artist in which he did this to you might want to send those notes to dragoneer and have him look at it. It isn't the first time this jack tard ripped someone off. Maybe a note from an admin or something on the site might make him realize that FA isn't a charity group.

God that guy is just an asshole.. Thanks for the warning I'll be putting him on block on both of my accounts. I hope at least something happends so you get at least something out of this besides a bad taste in your mouth.

[identity profile] kerstin-orion.livejournal.com 2011-07-03 07:02 pm (UTC)(link)
I understand this guys actions are upsetting, but please refrain from name-calling.

[identity profile] xianjaguar.livejournal.com 2011-07-03 07:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Ugh, this guy sounds like a real horror. Likening your artwork to 'taking a dump'? That's pretty darn low of him.

Thank you for the beware. He is on my blacklist now.

Man, and you're so NICE, I hate to think of someone being that rude and abrasive to you.

He's definitely manipulative. Looks like he's been getting himself free art this way for a while. I guess he was angry when he wasn't able to get free stuff out of you.

Glancing at his FA journals has shown this is definitely a habit of his.

I've had some encounters with this fellow. He used to be a very active troll on the Sly Cooper section of Fanfiction.net known as Octavarius something something. Very abrasive and insulting. Had sockpuppets with nazi-themed icons, too, if I recall. Once he even blanked the wikipedia page for one of the Sly Cooper villains, replaced it with some self-aggrandizing message, then used all his accounts to spam the same very harsh review to every chapter of every Sly Cooper story on the first couple pages of FF.net.

He seems to take pride in acting the way he does. It's both scary and a little sad.

Someone sure have a disgusting amount of free time. Reminds me of a certain someone who caused a fiasco at DeviantArt last year.

Okay, totally random and off-topic, but I must ask... Who did the art for your icon? I love it! <3

[identity profile] pixie-punch.livejournal.com 2011-07-03 08:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Wow. Look, no matter how unhappy he is with the outcome, he still MUST pay you for your work. That's how the real world works. When I go to a restaurant, I don't get to get to the end of the meal and then decide I don't want to pay.

Don't let his comments hurt your confidence in dealing with commissioners, especially since his comments were not constructive at all.

[identity profile] zippiner.livejournal.com 2011-07-03 08:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Ugh this.

I hated it so much when I worked in Pizza, and people would finish their entire pizza, and then try to get a refund from us because it was "Not good."

I mean I feel like this jerk goes to artists, and tries to finagle free work out of them, instead of even having any intent to pay.

[identity profile] badkitty.livejournal.com 2011-07-03 08:42 pm (UTC)(link)
wow. he "only pays if he likes what he sees"

what, does he try that in retail?

i never, ever do anything for free (barring gift art, of course). i've gotten burned doing that exact same thing.

i'm sorry i don't have much to say that will actually help, other than, don't do it again- at least get half upfront.
:(

[identity profile] zippiner.livejournal.com 2011-07-03 08:59 pm (UTC)(link)
All of the journals this guy makes just reek of 'Stay away from him'

It's all public call-outs of his pet peeves, or why artists have scammed him, and they don't deserve to be paid.
I think this guy will be the second person ever on my block list :|
