Recoloring a commission?

A while back I finished an adult commission for Person A which was meant to be a gift for Person B. It had both of their characters together in an adult situation. About a week after posting it, I recieved a note from Person B asking me to take it down. Apparently Person A did not have permission to commission artwork with Person B's character. I didn't think much of it. Person A provided a whole slew of reference pictures of the both of them together. I just thought of it as a relationship gone sour and took it down.
I put a lot of effort into the piece and am immensely proud of it. I was wondering if it would be wrong of me to recolor the characters so I could be able to repost it. I did the piece digitally, so recoloring would only be a few minutes in photoshop. If doing so crosses an ethical boundry, then I most definitely won't do it.
The original commission was taken in December as a Christmas gift.
