a drawing of a cartoonish alpaca with a pointer stick pointing towards some text: We at Artists Beware thank you for joining us on LiveJournal. The Live Journal community is now CLOSED. But when one door closes, a new one opens. Please join us at our New Site: artistsbeware.info.

That's all folks!

The community is officially closed for business on LiveJournal.

We are not going to answer any posts in the queue as of this posting. Membership is locked down; no one else can join/participate the community.

We have elected to not turn off comments; if we did all the comments go away(yikes!). We realize comments in some of the older entries are valuable resources for some so those will remain. Members are still able to comment; but since the community is effectively shut down we ask that you do not and focus your activity to the new website.

And one final reminder:

DO NOT RESUBMIT YOUR OLD BEWARES TO THE NEW SITE

We are hand archiving the community; thanks but no thanks we do not need assistance this will only hinder the progress.

Now what are you waiting for? GO JOIN THE SITE!

Thank you.

Howdy guys!

The time has come to say "Goodbye" to Artists Beware on LiveJournal. When Cel opened the website for people to look at you all jumped in with gusto using it! This is great!

Artists Beware will be turning off on LJ on January 31st, 2019.

What does this mean for you? It means that you should get over to artistsbeware.info asap to sign up to the new site if you have not already. Entries here will be locked for commenting, we won't be accepting submissions, etc. Full shut down.

We will NOT be deleting the community, nor the DreamWidth mirror; it'll stand here as additional reference because while we are archiving a large majority of the comm to the website; not everything is making the transition over.

Onward and upward, upward and onward!

Archiving

As a heads up archiving is going to continue on the new site for tonight. If you're currently subscribed to new submissions, please disable it so you aren't spammed.

We will be archiving sporadically, so there will be an announcement when it is safe to resubscribe.
[identity profile] jamesalesto.livejournal.com
Howdy!

First, we'd like to welcome [livejournal.com profile] snowhawk, [livejournal.com profile] armaina, and [livejournal.com profile] spades_wolf to our team.

Sno and Spades will be working in the background, so please do not send them any moderator PMs. You may direct questions to Armaina. As always any questions sent to one mod will be shared with the entire team, so please only send one message.

Second, the website is due for official launch in February. All that is left is minor tweaks, some graphics updates, and updating our massive archives. If you'd like to take a look at what we have now you're welcome to:
https://artistsbeware.info/

If there are any questions feel free to ask, but as launch gets closer we'll put out a more detailed list on how the site works and how archiving and tagging will work.
[identity profile] jamesalesto.livejournal.com
Howdy!

Due to information brought forward by Teil we feel the beware on her by Pebbles was no longer valid. It has been deleted and removed from our archives and social media.

Edit: As we've received a few messages concerning this deletion, please see this twitter thread.
[identity profile] jamesalesto.livejournal.com
Howdy!

From both our community poll and twitter poll, the results were that the community wants us to move.

Currently we have a domain, and our site is well under way with great help from TiantiShizhe on Twitter. We are using Invision Community.

What We Have
- A section for bewares where users will be able to search via an artist/client's name.
Searching an artist's name will bring up all entries, including resolved, open bewares, and positive entries.

- A forum where users will be able to seek advice.

- A resources section where we will host a variety of topics like "Freelancing 101" and "Building a ToS". Currently only moderators may post to this section.

What We Are Working On

- From a little glimpse in the forum screenshot we are currently working on a way to archive the entries from LJ. LJ doesn't make it easy, but this is what's likely going to take up the bulk of our time. Comments may have to come at a later date, or may be cherry picked based on the entry. Those can't be ported, and would have to be manually screenshotted or saved.

- Cosmetic. The blue background is not staying; it's a default. There will be multiple themes for users to choose from.

- Email support. No more having to pick a moderator. Emailing our email address should ping a central location, and all moderators will be notified.

Quick Q&A

1. Will I need an account to use the new site?
Currently, yes. You may register an account with us or use a twitter account. We will only collect your email address, and those are viewable to moderators only. At this time we do not intend for guests to be able to comment or post bewares, but they may view all of the site.

2. Will Artists_Beware maintain the same posting requirements?
No. A lot of our policies exist because of being situated on LJ. We will discuss what we can loosen up on now that we have our own home. However, requiring all real life names be censored will always be a must.

3. When do you plan on launching?
There is no estimate right now. The infrastructure is down, but the archive remains the biggest hurdle. We want to ensure that it's completely intact.

4. Is there anything else?
I would personally like to have a status that would indicate a member that isn't a moderator, but has proven themselves to be a valuable member of the community by their knowledge. We have many members who have continuously given fantastic advice through the years, and a level where you are highlighted to the community at whole would be a nice feature, I believe. A gold star contributor of sorts.

So this is where we're at. If you have any questions feel free to ask, and I will answer them to the best of my ability.
[identity profile] jamesalesto.livejournal.com
We understand that being posted to the community can be stressful and scary. Before responding to a beware made on you please take a moment to breathe, and then look over this post.

Will Artists_Beware remove a post about me?
No, once a post has been set into the community it is here to stay. If the submitter deletes it, the moderation team will restore it via our archives. What we can do is issue the beware a resolved tag, showing that you have fixed the problem. We also update our social media pages to reflect the change in tags.

What do I do if the submitter has lied about me?
Please submit into the comments of the beware your proof that the person has submitted false information. Ensure that all real life names and email addresses are censored prior to doing so. (If it isn't we'll have to hide your post until you fix it.) The moderation team will review your information, and proceed from there.

Someone hasn't posted about me yet, but they said they were. Can I contact you to stop the post?
No. The contents of the queue are reviewed independently of outside information. We also cannot disclose to you if something is in our queue or isn't.

What can I do to get this resolved as quickly as possible?

1. People want resolutions, not excuses. At the end of the day this is a business transaction, and personal issues have no place. If personal problems prevent an item from being completed, we suggest a refund.

2. Do not ask/ demand/ or hint that the Submitter delete the post. Excessive harassment will result in warnings, and lead to bans if the submitter feels pressured. We will not tolerate this.

3. Make arrangements for long term resolution if you can't fix this at once. People, especially the person you're doing business with, want to see effort.

4. Do not send people to harass the submitter for you. This is one of the quickest ways to sour your own reputation, as people will notice an influx of people they'd not seen previously posting and judge you accordingly.

5. Understand that AB isn't a drama group, but a resource for artists and commissioners.
The members of AB work with the information they're given at the time, and they will be honest, even if it's not something you want to hear. If you've made a mistake and are genuinely apologetic and work to resolve the issue, the members will remember and respect that.
[identity profile] jamesalesto.livejournal.com
Prior to participating in Artists_Beware we ask that users read over our rules. Ignorance of the Rules or Submission Guidelines will not prevent a warning or ban.

Rules

1. No screening, deleting, locking, disabling comments, or any sort of tampering with posts or comments, including your own!
If your situation is resolved, do not edit your post with strike-through text. You may add updates to the body of your post in order to provide evidence, additional information, or if the situation is resolved, as long as the initial warning remains intact. Violating this may result in an immediate permaban.

1a. By posting here, your post will be copied to ab_archive for the purposes of archiving. Deleted posts may be restored to artists_beware at our discretion.

2. Do not, in ANY WAY, contact anyone posted to the community if you are not personally involved in the transaction. We do not condone or tolerate harassment. THIS COULD GET YOU IMMEDIATELY BANNED!

3. No trolling, name-calling, or personal insults. If you see this occurring, do not respond. Racist, homophobic, and/or transphobic language will result in an immediate ban.

4. No criticism of artistic quality or monetary value. This is not a critique community, it is a transaction-based community.

5. Do not comment in a post questioning its relevance to this community. Posts are moderated, thus it 'belongs in artist's beware' if it's been posted.

Submission Guidelines

1. Submissions are to be transaction based. Art trades, game currency, or items for art trades, are acceptable as well as monetary exchange. Bewares on someone's character will not be accepted.

2. We only accept direct character theft posts. We will only take bewares where characters already exist and are commissioned without the owner's consent. We will not judge "character theft" posts where characters may look similar or share similar traits.

3. We do not accept group posts or group warning posts. Please make individual posts.

4. We do not accept proxy posts. Only individuals directly involved with the transaction may make a post to the community. All others will be rejected. An exemption to this are individuals who require translators to post to the community.

5. Submissions are to be as professional as possible. We will reject posts that are excessively hostile, name call, and utilize racist/ homophobic/ transphobic language. We understand you're upset, but please take some time to write out your submission thoughtfully.

6. No personal fights or excessive personal information. Bewares that contain personal disputes will be asked to trimmed down to only the transaction if there is one. Any posts that contain excessive personal information will be rejected. This includes economic statuses, what people are buying, medical conditions, etc.

Howdy!

We wanted to have a community wide discussion as we are in the very early stages of talks about moving the community to our own website.

For a long time this hasn't been on our mind simply because livejournal offers everything that is necessary to operate and maintain the community to a level of standards that we are comfortable with. However, as time has gone on the number of individuals who don't know how to utilize the website or who require assistance to utilize the website has gone up.

So we ask the question: Do you, the users, want to see Artists_Beware move onward to our own website?

Moving to a new website would require us to find a system that can:

- Allow for submissions that we can review. (This may mean setting up an offsite submission system like a google doc, or a built in submission system.)
- Allow for users to comment on posts. (This may require registration to the site.)
- Comment moderation. We want to maintain quality within in the comments just as it is now.
- A system that allows for tagging like we have now.

So far we are looking into word press, but are open to any suggestions.

Right now we also have a Twitter and a Facebook, but there are zero plans to utilize these platforms beyond announcing new posts to the main comm.

I'll be adding a poll. If you feel strongly one way or the other we would like to hear from you. In addition, if you feel like there's more Artists_Beware can do to make itself more openly accessible please do speak up!

[Poll #2085617]

Howdy!

Artists_Beware is seeking to bring new members onto our team.

What we need:
* All moderators must use the moderator discord. This is non negotiable. There is both a desktop and a mobile version. We have to be able to reliably get a hold of you.

* Availability in the US Timezones. All moderators work in pairs or more, so we need someone who can communicate with the group at large when we're discussing posts.

* You must be able to handle disagreements politely and courteously. There will be instances where decisions about a beware will be split between your fellow moderators.

* You must be able to handle harassment and disagreement from users professionally. We will not tolerate "clap backs" or aggressive behavior.

* Estimated working hours varies. It can be a few minutes worth of work per day, or sometimes a few hours per week. It's entirely dependent on queue load.

* Potential moderators do not have to field user questions or moderate comments if they don't want to. We are looking for queue moderators primarily.

* You must be able to keep the contents of the queue and any emails you receive confidential as we sometimes become privy to personal information. Failure to do so will result in your immediate removal from the team.

Some notes:
* If you would like to also moderate comments please be prepared to receive a lot of emails. We receive emails for every comment, edit, and submission into the community. It's recommended to make a separate email for A_B only.

* Previous moderation experience isn't required, but it is helpful. Knowledge of Livejournal's moderation system isn't required, but it is helpful.

What to Expect:
Individuals who are chosen will be interviewed, and then will enter in a training period with the other moderators via Discord. While we may pick multiple individuals, there may be a chance where not all trainees will become fully fledged mods.

Comments are screened below. Please fill out this form, and the applications will be open for 2 weeks. They will close October 9th 2018.

Length in A_B: (How long have you been a member)
Hours of Availability (in Central time): (The hours you will best be able to do queue work.)
Previous Experience: (Have you moderated a community before? It doesn't have to be specific to Livejournal, but knowing Livejournal's moderator interface would be helpful.)
Other Items to Know: (Are you a commission artist? Fursuit maker? Fluent in another language besides English?)
Why would you like to moderate A_B?:
Best way to contact you?: (LJ PM, email, etc.)

Howdy.

After discussion between the current staff, it's been decided that I step up to the plate as "owner" of Artists_Beware. I think it goes without saying that Dani left some very big shoes to fill. I can only hope that going forward we can continue to live up to and carry out her vision for Artists_Beware as a team.

Over the next few days you may notice some moderator posts reappearing as necessary.

Lastly, in the future we may bring on another moderator or two if it's required.

Attention!

On January 31st, 2019 Artists_Beware the Livejournal community is closing completely.

We are moving to our own website!
https://artistsbeware.info/
Do NOT repost your old bewares. They will be archived.

[identity profile] jamesalesto.livejournal.com
Today Artists_Beware's lead moderator and owner, [livejournal.com profile] kayla_la has passed away.

The mods of Artists Beware are taking some time to mourn and get ourselves reorganized.

Please bear with us while we work through this time.

Questions should be forwarded to [livejournal.com profile] oceandezignz via LJ PMs or her email Xaidezignz @ gmail.com.
Or [livejournal.com profile] bearprince at crowncommissions@gmail.com

Thank you
[identity profile] kayla-la.livejournal.com
Everyone,

The beware against Nightwish was removed from the community.

Upon much further research; a seller in the United States is still fully responsible for the safe delivery of a package even when it is out of their hands and with the chosen shipping service. Paypal also includes this in their TOS: https://www.paypal.com/ga/webapps/mpp/ua/useragreement-full

Please always make sure you insure your packages, as it's more for the seller's safety than the buyer. Keep your receipts.

We apologize for our mistake and hope the two parties involved can come to a mutual resolution soon!
[identity profile] kayla-la.livejournal.com

Q: What kind of identifying/sensitive information may I include in my post?

A: As a general rule, sensitive information such as legal names, addresses, phone numbers, email addresses, paypal addresses, etc may not be included in your beware and must be either cropped out or censored. We may make exceptions on a case by case basis for instances where transactions only occurred via mediums such as Facebook.

Q: Do you have a template for posting?

A: Yes! You can find our template here: http://artists-beware.livejournal.com/948608.html
Note that using the template isn't a requirement to post, as long as you include all the relevant information, but it does make things easier.

Q: How do I post to Artists_Beware? When I try, LJ tells me I cannot post here!

A: At the top of every LJ community page is a navigation bar that will tell you your membership status in a community, as well as give you shortcut links to doing various things within said community. You MUST be a member of Artists_Beware to be able to put a post into the queue, so if the nav bar is giving you a link to JOIN A_B, click it and follow the steps.

Q: How do I join/post to AB on desktop Livejournal?

Q: How do I join/post to AB on mobile Livejournal?

Q: What does a lost contact post entail?

A: Lost contact posts are basically named advice posts. Because of this, and because we don't vet it the same way as a beware, you have to write it in a neutral way. They are not meant to be subtle or not-so-subtle bewares with no proof. Please try to stick to a simple 'Does anybody know how to contact X person?' format. If you would like to discuss your situation, it would be best to write a proper beware.

Q: I submitted a post, why didnt it show up?

A: We are a moderated community. All posts are reviewed by at least 2 moderators before being approved or rejected. Because it is manual and we all work full-time jobs, posts can take 1-5 days to be handled.

Q: What happens if a post is rejected?

A: A rejection notice will be sent to either your Livejournal messages or your email attached to your Livejournal account, according to your settings. Make sure your email address is current, and check your spam folder before contacting us about your post.

Q: What is an LJ-cut?

A: http://www.livejournal.com/support/faq/75.html

Q: What do I do if I want to give positive feedback about a transaction?

A: We have monthly positive review posts! Go here and make sure you use the current month's post to leave your review!

Q: If I want to know the name of a subject from an advice post, may I ask?

A: No. Advice posts are to remain anonymous, as they are not reviewed and vetted with the same scrutiny beware posts are. Do not ask, reveal, or hint at the identity of someone being posted about in an advice post.

Q: What if I found/know of [bewared person]s alternate account?

A: You may share this information in the relevant post for that person, provided you can provide solid proof that they are the same person. "I think they're the same", "Their art looks similar", "I heard from a friend, "Their writing style is similar" and other 'probably's and 'maybes' are not considered solid proof.

Q: Can I submit a general warning/post on behalf of someone else?

A: No. We are a transaction-based community for individual experiences, and you are not allowed to make either 'general scam warning' posts or post for somebody else. Individuals may only post about their own experiences.

Q: Why do I need to censor the names of third parties in my bewares?

A: As a general rule, if someone is unrelated to the case at hand, we would rather respect their privacy and not have them included in a post without their consent.

Q: Is there an easy list for the main tags to browse?

A: Easy Access to Main Tags: Mod Posts, Beware, Advice for Artists, Advice for Commissioners, Discussion, Monthly Positive Feedback

Q: I have a question that isn't answered here! What do I do?

A: Please see our profile page for information on how to reach a moderator!

Hello folks,

[livejournal.com profile] arphalia has left our team, and we thank him for his work with us!

This means that Artists_Beware is opening for moderator applications.

What we need:

  • Discord is a must (there is both a desktop and in-browser version, so it’s quite accessible). All of our communication takes place on the A_B mod chat. We also require Skype as a back up. This is not negotiable. It must be easy to reach you.
  • Based in the US or availability during US time zones. Our most active hours are between 1 pm central to 9 pm central.
  • Moderators work in pairs for reviewing bewares, never alone, so you need to be able to be around at a time that lets you work with another moderator.
  • You will need to be able to calmly and professionally handle harassment and disagreements.
  • There will be an interview and a training period before you are fully brought on to help discern if you are a good fit.
  • You must keep your Livejournal password and email password secure and separated. It might be best to make a separate private email just for A_B business.

    Notes:

  • You can opt to do queue work only, thus not moderating comments.
  • If you choose to do comment moderation, be prepared to receive a lot of A_B related email. Every comment and edit is emailed to comment moderators.
  • Queue only moderators can opt out of fielding user questions.
  • The queue and any A_B related content are to remain confidential.

To apply fill out the following form:

Length in A_B: (How long have you been a member)
Hours of Availability (in Central time): (The hours you will best be able to do queue work.)
Previous Experience: (Have you moderated a community before? It doesn't have to be specific to Livejournal, but knowing Livejournal's moderator interface would be helpful.)
Other Items to Know: (Are you a commission artist? Fursuit maker? Fluent in another language besides English?)
Why would you like to moderate A_B?:
Best way to contact you?: (LJ PM, email, etc.)

Comments on this post are screened, do not unscreen them.

For an artist, be you a hobbyist or pro; it is positively critical to have a good, solid Terms of Service (T.O.S.). One that includes both your rights as the artist and the customer's rights in relation to your services. Not only does this educate your customers on how the process works and what to expect from it, but it protects both of you in case something goes wrong.

In our first official T.O.S. discussion post, we discussed what to include in a Terms of Service, what constituted good terms, and what were questionable, shady, or downright illegal terms.

Now, once again; here's your chance to post your T.O.S. for critique. Don't know how to word a particular point you're trying to convey? Want to make sure your T.O.S. is fair for you and your customers? Need to make sure you didn't leave any gigantic loopholes? Link your T.O.S. here, and members can give you their advice.

This post can also be used to discuss any other questions that you have on your mind regarding how to build a T.O.S., maintain a good T.O.S. and how to make sure your clients read and agree to your T.O.S.

Before you post, please read through the previous T.O.S. discussions; apply what you learn there to your T.O.S., and then link your revised T.O.S. here for help polishing up.

Please do not post a half-finished T.O.S. and ask folks to rewrite it for you. Be prepared for honest critique!
    A good 'break down' for a T.O.S.:
    Intro
    Artist's Rights
    -Payment
    -Process
    -Preferences
    -Publishing
    Client's Rights
    -Fixes/Redraws
    -Publishing
    -Behavior
    Communication
    Refunds
    Shipping & Handling

-When it comes to an artist's preferences for what they will or will not draw; simple is often better. You -may- list what you are not willing to draw, but it can get lengthy. If you're not willing to list, or find your list getting longer than your own T.O.S.; but do not might getting ideas pitched at you to pick from, a good solid "Commission themes are to be approved at artist's discretion at all times. Artist reserves the right to decline any commission, without reason." will help you out.

-When talking payment, the community majority is in favor of using Paypal INVOICES. Invoices give the artist control over how much money they're getting, when they get it, and the content of the invoice (in case you're afraid of what a client may write in your place).

-Fixes/Redraws need to have a firm hard limit set to them, as well as some suggestions to go along with them. Detail WHAT part of the process a client may (or may not) ask for fixes on, how many they get and if they go over that limit; what you will charge additionally for it. Also suggest the client wait a minimum of 24-48 hours (if you can afford that wait) to really find out what they want fixed or what they can live with, to the satisfaction of you and themselves.

-Tell your clients in the T.O.S. what you will not tolerate from them from the get-go. If you do not appreciate sexual advances/role-play/commentary; state it in the T.O.S. that you don't play those games and such behavior will not be tolerated during the commission process.

-Communication: State to potential clients how often you'll be in contact with them, or your comfort level in them contacting you for status updates, or where to look for updates if you use a service like Trello or keep a queue maintained on your blog/art site/etc.

-Remind your clients of your rights as the artist, that you own the artwork created due to copyright law. You have full publication/printing rights, but will out of respect to them ask if you can print their commissions for other purposes. If you give re-posting rights to your clients; state here and now where they can or cannot post to, if they have to use a watermarked copy you provide, etc.
-PRIVACY: State your policies (and applicable fees) on privacy of commissions, if you require permissions of secondary characters involved in said private commissions and the possible longevity of how long a private commission may stay private.

-Include refunding options, when a client is a allowed to back out, deposit fees (if building tangible art), etc. Just don't say 'no refunds, what so ever'.

Remember; the tips in the above cut are only the tip of the iceberg for a T.O.S. they're there to get your brain going on what to do. The Mods or even long time comm members will be absolutely glad to offer their two-cents on any other questions or topics you have come to mind, on top of the critique.

If you feel your T.O.S. is quite solid feel free to post it so others can use it as an example.
    [identity profile] kayla-la.livejournal.com
This is an announcement that we are tweaking two rules, outlined below:

    1. From this announcement forward, tracing and art theft posts will fall under our usual 'no proxy' blanket rule. This means an involved party will need to be the person who posts the beware, whether it be a purchaser or the artist whose work was stolen/copied. Be aware that the 'must be transaction related' rule still applies to art theft posts, and that you can always take your proxy art theft posts to [livejournal.com profile] art_theft.

    2. All Paypal addresses and real life names should be censored when you submit screencaptures, pending our best judgment in specific cases. Previously, we manually checked to see if this information was publicly available, but we have decided censoring them from the start would be a better direction.

    Thank you for reading!
