IMPORTANT EDIT
Just had this comment via FA from one of my watchers:
Major alert - shortly after following that link, my google account has been hijacked and has been mass spammng. I have d/c'ed from the internet (using phone atm), and am virus scanning. Be VERY careful, or avoid altogether.
If anyone thinks they got something nasty I'm really sorry - try running HouseCall ( http://housecall.trendmicro.com/ ) - its an online based virus scanner so it can't be affected by anything on your system. I had no negative consequences from visiting this website but some others have - if you have been affected I am incredibly sorry :(
A friend of mine recently alerted me to yet another art theft rich art site - Never To Much Yiff. You can see it advertised at the owners FurAffinity page and he states:
"You can download and archive of 11,745 sorted by artist. I am not selling it is free to download so enjoy and please donate 2$ every 5$ goes to animal shelter of my choice"
(I took some liberty with this quote... the typos on the picture made me cry).
So in a nutshell, this person Techie9098 is putting up work by other artists without permission, and charging "donation" for them. I haven't checked the artists affected by this though as it requires downloading a torrent with all of these files.
Just a heads up for people.
EDIT:
His main page has been replaced by a Caramelldansen video but the download link remains and the torrent is still on pirate bay.

Date: 2010-06-21 07:58 pm (UTC)I just sat in on some of his chat room convo and watched him battle with concerned artsts. He just banned everyone that was telling him that art theft is wrong and he gave some song and dance about how he'll shut down his website for a $20 donation (yeah right), and that it's supposedly not wrong to take this art because artists who put up their work on art websites are essentially giving their art to the world for anyone to use.
Give me a break.. *rolls eyes*

Date: 2010-06-22 04:03 am (UTC)I know and understand that it sucks when someone takes anothers work and does something we don't know about, or want them to do. HOWEVER, let's just rationalize for a second and ask ourselves, WHY is it bad? IF someone looses absolutely nothing and their ability to create further works is not hindered, their livelihood not threatened, their reputation in tact, etc. etc., what, besides the lack of permission (which is debatable) makes it wrong?
I personally do not believe that others should 'infringe' our works to OUR DETRIMENT, as in, do the same thing we are doing and make money WE ought to have made, or get attention or praise, or whatever motivations we hold for posting on the net, INSTEAD of us who have created it. BUT if someone starts posting or selling anothers work who never intended to do so themselves, they've actually lost nothing, even though the 'infringer' has benefited from work they did not create.
This is also not to say that we should support or encourage people who 'rip off' others works, BUT I don't think legislation or legal action is the solution. I think I failed in the last thread to suggest a viable alternative, but I propose innovation and creativity.
If we want to stop sites like this, we need to get more creative. I think it's much more effective to start building up sites that beat these 'infringers' at their own game. Why do you suppose livestreaming on official sites is gaining in popularity? because the public generally wants to go to the right source and support the creators of work, but if the creators only use the law as a sword to vanquish 'pirates' then they're still not giving the consumer, i.e. the public, what they really want. One may say they have no obligations to the public, but when you put your work into the public, its an exchange. No one does it for NO reason. whether to improve through advice/comments, the attention, money, opportunity, making people happy, etc. etc. it's an exchange, and the internet was never set up to give IP owners/creators 100% rights. The main goal was the sharing of ideas.
Sorry for being tl;dr again, but basically, instead of using a really terrible piece of legislation like the DMCA, try getting creative. Communities like A_B are a perfect example of socially driven solutions that help give power to affected parties without invoking use of the law.

Date: 2010-06-22 05:31 am (UTC)So according to your logic it would be okay for someone to take something you own which you weren't using because they wouldn't be doing you any harm.
Here's a notion for you, my art belongs to me, and I am the only one who gets to decide what happens to it, not you, not joe random, not anyone else who isn't me.
Do you have any idea how offensive you are when you come into a community that is full of working artists and presume to lecture us about how we shouldn't care about someone stealing and profiting (since both sites ARE making a profit from it) from our artwork because you don't believe that it's harmful? Well do you?
It's called failure to enforce, it's the legal precedent where a failure to protect your rights means you can be STRIPPED of them. Ergo, if we don't chase down someone who is ILLEGALLY profiting from our work, then if we decide to do something profitable with it, they could SUE us and possibly get our right to OUR work stripped away because we haven't protected it.
AGAIN THEFT IS NOT CREATIVITY. Maybe it is in bizarro land but we live in the real world.
Go and actually do some research so you don't offend people via ignorance as you have been doing.

Date: 2010-06-22 05:50 am (UTC)Or...did you skip that part entirely? He was trying to black male people into donating to his "cause" and only after a $20 would he remove the torrent.
He was trying to profit off what he calls "free art". That right there is grounds for a stir. Please look a bit more carefully before tl;dring.
